About Leo
I study how AI changes knowledge, learning, and human judgment.
My work connects public writing, research, teaching, and institutional leadership. I develop practical approaches to examining AI answers and building the capability to make thoughtful decisions with AI.
I am Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Virginia, Special Advisor to the Provost on AI Literacy, and Professor of Education by courtesy.
I grew up in Hong Kong and have studied and worked across Asia, Europe, and the United States. My education includes time in England and China, and my career has included work in the UK, Ireland, and France. My training spans screenwriting, survey research, information studies, and higher education. That range continues to shape the questions I ask.
Learning across disciplines
I served as ACRL president in 2024–25. Before UVA, I held leadership positions at the University of New Mexico, Penn State, Old Dominion, and the University of Alabama, following my early career at Kansas State.

Leo S. Lo is a writer, researcher, and university leader who studies how AI changes knowledge, learning, and human judgment. He develops practical approaches that help people examine AI answers, build AI literacy, and make informed decisions about institutional change. His work includes the CLEAR Framework, CARE approach, PASTAS checklist, Universal AI Literacy Framework, and Anchored Adaptation method. His Universal AI Literacy Framework has informed AI literacy frameworks and guidance at Penn State, Queen’s University, and Clemson University. He is Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Virginia, Special Advisor to the Provost on AI Literacy, and Professor of Education by courtesy. He co-founded UVA’s AI Literacy and Action Lab with Christa Acampora and served as president of the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2024–25. Raised in Hong Kong, he has studied and worked across Asia, Europe, and the United States. He holds degrees in higher education management, library and information studies, survey research, and screenwriting, as well as a postgraduate diploma in AI for Business from Oxford.
