About
I study how AI changes knowledge, judgment, and action, and how institutions can adapt under uncertainty.
I turn that work into practical frameworks, checklists, and protocols that people can inspect, test, and use. I publish it openly, along with the research beneath it: national survey findings, the barriers people report, and the parts that did not work.
I am Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Virginia, Special Advisor to the Provost on AI Literacy, and Professor of Education by courtesy. I co-founded the UVA AI Literacy and Action Lab and co-chair the University's AI governance committee. I served as president of the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2024–25.

Background
I grew up in Hong Kong, attended boarding school in England, and built my career in the United States. Before entering academic libraries, I trained as a screenwriter. I am a lifelong Arsenal supporter.

Leo S. Lo studies how AI changes knowledge, judgment, and action, and how institutions can adapt under uncertainty. He is Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Virginia, Special Advisor to the Provost on AI Literacy, and Professor of Education by courtesy. He created the CLEAR Framework, now used in more than 200 institutional guides, and develops practical methods for evaluating AI answers, building AI literacy, guiding institutional adaptation, and governing how AI systems use cultural collections. Lo served as president of the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2024–25. His book, Anchored Adaptation, is forthcoming from ACRL in 2027.
